With play suspended due to darkness, the first round ended with the reigning Champion, Phil Mickelson, sitting alone on top of the leaderboard after shooting -8 for a 63. Phil had the short game back in working order and started with a birdie on his opening hole, the par 4, 10th, an amazing shot that was from around 40 yards behind the green that had to land in exactly the right spot and clear a bunker and ended up a few feet away with a gimme for birdie.  Other Mickel-highlights were his chip in for birdie on the par 5, 17th to close out his front 9 and for the day, Phil racked up eight birdies, 10 pars, and most importantly no bogeys. He also had only 22 putts on the day which is the second fewest for the opening round.

Is Dustin Johnson throwing a coming out party? Currently sitting -5/T3 after coming away with the victory last week at Pebble Beach, he put together a pretty impressive round of 66 with six birdies, 11 pars, and a single bogey, not a bad way to follow up a W. And with that victory, he is now 1 of 2 players under the age of 25 to have multiple Tour victories, Anthony Kim being the other.

Jim Furyk is back near the top of the leaderboard, also sitting at -5 after shooting a bogey free round, making 5 birdies and 13 pars. He hit 83% of the greens in regulation yesterday.

The 17 year old prodigy, Ryo Ishikawa finished his first ever round on the PGA tour with a 2 over, 73 and is currently sitting T114. He posted two birdies and two bogeys to go with his 13 pars, and a disappointing double. The double came on the par 4, 7th when he 3 putted from five feet and the putter seemed to be the issue for Ryo throughout his entire opening round, though he did manage to 2 putt for birdie on his first hole, the par 5, 1st.  How sweet would it feel to have opened your first ever tournament on the PGA Tour with an eagle?
