Why does ESPN give a cushy golf coverage job to a man, Gene Wojciechowski (Gene from here on out) who CLEARLY hates golf?  This year, I’ve read a few of Gene’s articles regarding the majors and watched him on TV and it’s plain as day that this dude hates the sport.  So why the fuck is he covering it?  Why is ESPN giving golf fans the finger like this?

Oh, that’s right, because ESPN is a fucking joke.

Let’s check out his most recent article…

How do I say this delicately? This PGA Championship is duller than watching Herb Kohler’s beard grow, more boring than a recap of your neighbor’s fantasy cricket league draft.

Three rounds have come and gone and I don’t know whether to doze off or leap from the Met Life blimp. Right now it’s only slightly more interesting than a Martha Stewart segment on decoupaging bangle bracelets.

What’s the point of this shit, Gene?  If you don’t like it, why don’t you request a different job?  And ESPN…if you read this shit, why don’t you immediately put someone who DOES like golf in charge of golf coverage?  This isn’t an isolated incindent either…

Check out this gem from the British Open.

Here’s what I want you to do:

Go to a mirror. Now spend the next 4½ hours watching your eyebrow hair grow. If possible, do so with the sound of seagulls squawking in the background.

Do that, and you’ll know exactly what it was like to watch the final round of the Open Championship.

Was the Open exciting?  Meh, not especially, but it wasn’t devoid of entertainment either.  Louis Oosthuizen put on a clinic, one that’d be celebrated to the high heavens if his name was Tiger or Phil, but for some reason Gene is completely incapable of finding something good to write about when a player that only hardcore golf fans are familiar with.  It’s pathetic.  It’s bad journalism.

Listen, I realize that golf is a niche sport.  I realize that there is a certain subset of society that loves golf and that it’s not for everyone.  And yes, I realize that ESPN is running a business and trying to increase their product’s visibility by putting a well known author in charge of covering the sport’s highest profile events, but the question is; why this guy?

Hell, megabucks, megaschmuck Rick Reilly would probably jump at the chance to cover these events like Gene is, and would probably be able to translate his excitement, as a true golf fan, with much better affability than this guy who treats every event like it’s a fucking root canal.

The PGA is looking great right now.  There are young stars with OODLES of promise at the top of the leaderboard along with the grizzled vets, Furyk and Elk.  We’ve heard the stories about how great Rory McIlroy and Jason Day will be, heard how talented Dustin Johnson and Martin Kaymer are and we’ve seen Nick Watney look promising enough to consider him a major threat down the road.

I’m sorry, but if you can’t find excitement in that, well…you’re just not a golf fan.  So you probably, you know, shouldn’t be covering golf.

Just an observation.
