A Cuban Cohiba? Why yes, I'll take one of those for my victory cigar!

Conichiwa golf fans, time for everyone’s favorite segment, the picks.

This week, we’re adding our latest correspondent, JayV to the running, and while it might seem dickish to give him last place points so late in the game, if anyone can conjure up the minor miracle it’ll take to unseat yours truly, it’s Jay.

And while we’re welcoming Jay, I’d also like to point out the incredible feat achieved by our very own Schneider.  This week, the impossible was proven possible as Mr. Schneider managed to miss a cut in an event without a cut.  Shit like that doesn’t happen everyday, my pretties, and honestly, my belief in the supernatural has been reinforced.  It’s not everyday that you get to witness the hand of God in action, so savor the flavor.

Anyways…here are the current standings.

  1. Savant096 – 257
  2. Lefty – 476
  3. AC – 529
  4. Schneider – 629
  5. Tips – 650
  6. Old man penna – 713
  7. JayV – 713

Now onto the picks… (more…)

A little over a week ago I caught a segment of Tee Time, a talk radio show hosted by Steve Czaban. If you don’t know Czaban, he’s a sports radio guy who primarily co-hosts a weekly show with Andy Pollin called The Sports Reporters. However, he happens to be a scratch handicap and knows a thing or two about the game of golf. During this particular day, Czaban was discussing the current state of the PGA Tour, the prosperity it experienced during the Tiger Woods dominance, and what would need to happen for the tour to continue to grow should Tiger fail to find his game again. Considering that all year-long it’s been only questions focusing on Tiger and his “struggles” on and off the course and not the future of the tour, I found this to be an interesting question. But it was Czaban’s next statement that made the topic really become seriously interesting to me as a fan of golf. (more…)

Here is your score update for our national championship, as we head into the third round:

Leaders:

  • Greame McDowell -3
  • Phil Mickelson -1
  • Ernie Els -1
  • Ryo Ishikawa -1
  • Dustin Johson -1
  • Jerry Kelly E
  • Paul Casey E
  • Brandon de Jonge E
  • Alex Cejka E
  • K.J. Choi +1

As for the Tuna Golf staff picks:

  • Phil Mickelson -1
  • Lee Westwood +3
  • Tiger Woods +4
  • Nick Watney +5
  • Zach Johnson +7
  • Tom Watson +8

On another note, the course seems extremely fair this year, and it looks like we’re now firmly in the era of the kinder, gentler U.S. Open.  Except, of course, for the green complex at number 14.  It’s been a bloodbath there so far this week.  Paul Casey, Kenny Kim, Ian Poulter, and Y.E. Yang all carded an 8 there, while Zach Johnson posted a 9.  Absolutely brutal.

Ten years ago this week, Tiger Woods put on what is most likely the greatest major championship performance in golf history, when he won his first of three US Open Tournaments at the 2000 Open at Pebble Beach. He overpowered a course that did not allow another player to even match par, let alone be under it. His 15 stroke victory will probably live at the highest winning margin in major golf history. After one round at Harbour Town Alex Cejka is our leader. He shot a bogey free -7 on Thursday for a very nice 64. To make the day even better for Cejka he drained a 47-footer for birder on the 17th.  Unfortunately he missed a few months last season due to neck surgery from pain that started at the The Open last year. Cejka noted that, “I’m not 100 percent. I’m like 85 percent.” and that “It takes time. But I’m really happy in the way my body feels right now. Now it’s a good time to start really practicing hard and play a lot of tournaments. He obviously played quite well, we’ll see if he is able to keep up the momentum into weekend.

There’s nothing to talk about in the golf world, and damnit, that sucks.  So how are we going to spend our time before the Benz in a few weeks and the “real” start to the tour in a few months?  Why, listing the hell out of everything we can, that’s how.

Today, we’re not going to order these like in the Under, instead, we’ll just throw em up in any order because they’re all so deserving (or undeserving…whatever).  So lets cut the BS and get right to the meat.

Adam Scott: Where to begin…maybe the four top-10’s in majors since 2000 or the fact that he’s missed TWICE as many cuts in the same time?  Or what about stealing Tiger’s swing, despite it’s ineffiencies, and failing to improve at all?  Or we could use my personal favorite…the unimaginative short game and terrible clutch putting (Houston aside).  All sound good.

Whatever the reason is, I’m sick of seeing him on TV because chicks like him.  I want to see good golf, not sprayed drives and someone who looks like they’re having about as much fun as if they were at a funeral (hey, at least Vijay is a good golfer…his game is fun even if he looks bored to tears).  Scott just doesn’t care and all we see on TV is him wasting his ridiculous amount of talent.  If he carried himself like Geoff Ogilvy, he’d have multiple majors…easily.
